While Germany’s passport has been ranked as the third most powerful passport in the world for visa-free travel in 2025, it had secured the top spot in 2024.
Every January, the law firm Henley & Partners compiles an international passport index, which is considered one of the most “essential and reliable” rankings for measuring the strength of countries’ passports. In 2025, the company ranked 199 passports based on their usefulness for international travel, determining whether they grant users visa-free access to 227 different travel destinations.
Germany’s passport, which was the strongest in the world in 2024, has fallen by two spots and now shares third place with the passports of Finland, France, Italy, Spain, and South Korea.
