That has led to Earth Overshoot Day arriving earlier and earlier, moving from as late as December 30 in 1970. In the pandemic year of 2020, it did move back somewhat significantly from July 29 to August 22. To determine the date of Earth Overshoot Day for each year, Global Footprint Network calculates the number of days of that year that Earth\u2019s biocapacity suffices to provide for humanity\u2019s Ecological Footprint. The remainder of the year corresponds to global overshoot. Earth Overshoot Day is computed by dividing the planet\u2019s biocapacity (the amount of ecological resources Earth is able to generate that year), by humanity\u2019s Ecological Footprint (humanity\u2019s demand for that year), and multiplying by the number of days in a year. This year, as we are in a leap year, it is 366 days: Earth Overshoot Day 2024 falls on August
